SAL Block 10 Completed

Hi everyone,

The last three weeks have whizzed by and today is the day to show an update of our progress on various projects. Claire is sewing the same design as me. It is called Friendship Quilt V by Whispered by the Wind. Progress is slow, we are only stitching one block of the 25 intended blocks every three weeks. However, it is nice to see it grow and I have now completed 40% of my version.

Here is my latest block

CIMG4061

and here it is with the others.

CIMG4062

This block is supposed to resemble the card trick patchwork block. I have no idea how that pinwheel found its way into the centre 😉 Nothing wrong with originality is there?

Anyway, the other stitchers are all working on their own exciting projects. Do pop over to see how they are doing. Just click the names below and the links will take you there. Some group members aren’t posting updates today but their blogs are worth a visit anyway.

Claire, Gun, Carole, Alison, Jule, Elizabeth, Wendy, LucyAnn and Kate.

The next update will be on the 19th April 2015. I look forward to seeing you then.

Block number 9 is finished!

Good morning everyone,

The last three weeks have whizzed by and it’s time to show you another update of the SAL project that I’m stitching with Claire. It’s a design by Whispered by the Wind called Friendship V Quilt.

My latest block looks like this:

CIMG4051 And the progress so far now looks like this.

CIMG4052

The fractional stitches are still driving me up the wall. Thanks to Claire who had the brainwave to suggest we stitch on evenweave rather than aida fabric. All in all, it’s probably worth the effort.

The other crafters in the group are also publishing updates today. They are all doing different but equally gorgeous projects. Kate isn’t updating on the SAL this time but I’m still including a link to her blog because it’s truly amazing!! Please click the names to see what everyone else has been up to.

Claire, Gun, Carole, Alison, Jule, Elizabeth, Wendy, LucyAnn and Kate.

The next update will be on the 29th March 2015.

See you then,

SAL Update Block 8

Hello everyone,

It was touch and go as to whether I’d have anything much to show for the last three weeks in the cross stitch department but I made it!

First, this is what made me smile yesterday along with some crafty presents including a new cross stitch kit for a Christmas decoration, buttons for my stash and a handmade needle holder from my lovely friend Claire, not forgetting a gorgeous handmade card. There was also a new quilting ruler from my other half, sock knitting wool from my dear friend Lin (all shades of yummy purple), some Bali Pops and a quilting book from my sister ( she knows a challenge when she sees one!) and my daughter thought it was time to launch me into the 21st century with a smart phone. So now you can see why I was a little bit distracted from sewing yesterday. The recipe links for this cake and a baked cheesecake are in the comments below.

Then, just when I thought my birthday celebrations were coming to an end, I received a phone call from a wonderful family friend, who lives half way around the world in India. Isn’t technology amazing? It was lovely to catch up with him at the end of a great day 🙂

Yes, stitching this block meant burning the midnight oil on my birthday last night but I really enjoyed having the deadline for once. I’d sewn the border a couple of days before and it was a good job I had.

CIMG3936

This is how it looks with the other seven blocks.

CIMG3935

The design is by Whispered by the Wind and both me and Claire are stitching it. All of the other SAL members are stitching something different. Even though my enthusiasm for stitching this piece is waning, I’m enjoying getting it done bit by bit and I’m glad I didn’t push it in a drawer and forget about it. It isn’t the fault of the design or the chart, it’s just that I have other things to do at the moment. Anyway, I really enjoyed the enforced sewing marathon yesterday.

The other crafters in the group are also posting updates today so do pop over to see what they’ve been up to.

We have a new SAL member to introduce this time. Please visit LucyAnn over at LucyAnn and Luna Craft. She is embarking on a Disney design. I’ll be cheering her along with that 🙂

The rest of the group can be found by clicking the following links.

Our next update will be on 8th March 2015. We hope to see you then.

SAL Update Stage 6

Good morning everyone,

It’s time for another SAL update. Me and Claire are still plodding on with the Quilt cross stitch by Whispered by the Wind and all of the other SAL members are stitching something different.

I have block number 7 to share with you today. Progress is slow but sure.

7 All seven blocks now look like this.

7 blocks

I’ve made lots of changes to this block so it is almost unrecognisable from the chart but I enjoyed stitching it my way and I’m pleased with the result. I still haven’t caught up with Claire. Every time I’m snapping at her heels she speeds off again LOL.

The other crafters in the group are also posting updates today so do pop over to see what they’ve been up to.

Claire, Gun, Carole, Alison, Jule, Elizabeth, Wendy and Kate.

Our next update will be on 15th February 2015. We hope to see you then.

Cross Stitch Quilt SAL Stage 5

Good morning everyone,

Is it really three weeks since the last SAL progress update?

I don’t have much to show for the last three weeks as far as stitching is concerned but I did finish block six which I’d started last time.

All six blocks together now look like this.

You will all probably have guessed by now, because of the different format of this post and the photos with rubbish colours, that my laptop has finally given up. It actually overheated on Christmas Day. I’ll have to make do with this small tablet until I get sorted with a new laptop. The WordPress app isn’t this most friendly app to use but it is definitely better than nothing. Why it has rotated my photos without me asking it to I don’t know. I even turned my photos around and uploaded them again in the hope that it would turn them the right way up, but no. It also won’t allow resizing.

My time is not my own at the moment and it’s unlikely to get better in the near future so I’ve discussed with Claire the possibility of setting smaller goals for each SAL update. She is also otherwise engaged at the moment so we have decided to only stitch one block instead of two every three weeks. We are never going to achieve two blocks so the goal posts have been moved. I’ll make an extra special effort to get at least one block done every three weeks. One of these days I’ll catch up to Claire 😉

Anyway, the other stitchers in the group are also posting updates today so pop along to see what they’ve been up to. I’m stitching from the same design as Claire but everyone else is doing something different. Just click on their names below to see what they are up to.

Cross Stitch Quilt SAL Stage 4

Hello everyone,

It’s three weeks since the last SAL update. I’m here to show you progress (only a tiny bit I’m afraid) on the quilt cross stitch design by Whispered by the Wind. This is the beginning of my 6th block. By the way, the fractional stitches are still driving me mad!

CIMG3783

It doesn’t look too good before the backstitch does it?

This is what it all looks like together.

CIMG3784

There’s not much to show for three weeks of stitching but the combination of poor light and lack of time has resulted in this poor contribution. I’ve also been making presents which had to take priority. They will be revealed on my other blog very soon. Don’t worry, only one of them is a Christmas present and the recipient is only three years old at the end of this month. I don’t think she reads my blog yet Winking smile

I’m stitching from the same chart as Claire and all of the other stitchers in our group also have project updates for you to see today. Click on the names below to go to their blogs and see what they are up to.

Claire, Gun, Kate, Carole, Eleanor, Alison, Jule, Elizabeth and Wendy.

Our next update will be on 4th January 2015…..YES 2015!!. We hope to see you then Smile.

Quilt Stitch Along Stage 2

Good morning everyone,

I hope you’ve all had a lovely week with plenty of time to craft.

It’s time to show you the progress I’ve made on the quilt cross stitch design by Whispered by the Wind. This is rapidly becoming a design “inspired by” the the one mentioned above. My blocks are nothing like the ones on the chart. Anyway, I’m enjoying stitching and that’s all that matters I suppose.

This is my third block.

CIMG3609

This is block number four.

CIMG3610

This is what it looks like so far.

CIMG3611

I’m stitching from the same chart as Claire and all of the other stitchers in the group have equally exciting project updates for you today. Click on the names below to go to their blogs and see what they are up to.

Claire, Gun, Kate, Carole, Eleanor, Alison, Jule, Elizabeth and Wendy.

Our next update will be on 23rd November. We hope to see you then Smile.

We’re off!

Good morning everyone,

Here is the first part of my cross stitch quilt blocks from a design by Whispered by the Wind. I am stitching along with nine other ladies.1 blockThe blocks should be outlined with contrasting coloured backstitch but I decided to use matching threads instead. I have also changed the block colour placement quite a lot. I know, I’m very naughty!

It looks like a simple design but it was surprisingly stitch intensive. There are 20 blocks to choose from and the finished piece will be 5 x 5 blocks. I’ll be randomly choosing which one to stitch next. Here are the first two blocks together. I should have four completed blocks ready for the next update.

2 blocksThe SAL group now has ten stitchers including me and the links to their blogs are below. Claire is also doing the above design but, as usual, we are sewing very different versions. You’ll have to pop across to Claire’s blog to see how she has decided to stitch it. Everyone else in the group is working on a project of their choice, using the three weekly updates as motivation to complete at least some stitching. Please bear in mind that group members are located all over the world, so if you don’t see today’s post on their blogs yet, it could be due to time difference.

We’ll publish the next update on 2nd November.

Here are the links. Just click on the names below.

Claire, Gun, Kate, Carole, Eleanor, Alison, Jule, Elizabeth and Wendy.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend Smile

A New Beginning

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are all having a lovely weekend, making and doing!

If you read my recent post, you will know that my last cross stitch project is now finished. It’s time to move on to a new challenge.

I often look for cross stitch projects on-line but rarely find what I like or want to commit time to doing myself, let alone see something that both me and Claire would like to do. Well she has come to my rescue on several occasions. Is it because she knows what I like? Or is it because she knows where to look for nice things? I don’t know the answers to those questions but what I do know is that there was much dithering, as usual from me, about what we will be stitching as our next SAL project. Then Claire emailed to say “How about this one?”. She even offered to buy two charts from America and post mine on to me which worked out much cheaper than ordering them separately and both of us paying shipping to England and France. She even paid for my chart as well but there is a catch. There’s always a catch Winking smile. Claire doesn’t want me to pay her back in money. She is going to decide what crafting goodies she wants me to send her as payment of my debts instead. That suits both of us.

Anyway, this is what we have decided to stitch. It’s by Whispered by the Wind and it is a cross stitch project that satisfies my love of quilting and embroidery at the same time.

CIMG3505

The chart looks great, really clear and quite large. There are 20 quilt blocks to choose from so we have decided to stitch 5 x 5. I’ll be repeating some of the blocks I like best and omitting my least favourite ones. Claire is taking a slightly different approach which I’ll allow her to tell you about.

Having agreed on a project, there was another problem. Which threads would I use? I am absolutely hopeless at making up my mind. With fabric for quilting I have no problems so I don’t understand my issue with threads.

Anyway, this is what I have settled upon….sort of.

CIMG3504

I was going to stitch on black evenweave, using a selection of blue and purple threads but was quickly warned off by my OH. He correctly advised that the nights are getting darker earlier and that I wouldn’t be able to see very well to stitch, which in turn would mean that he would suffer my frustrations (although he didn’t actually mention that bit).

So, the decision is made. I’m going to use white 28 count evenweave fabric and autumnal coloured threads. I may not stick exactly to the group of threads in the photo as I have lots of other part skeins but it’s definitely going to be autumnal.

The next bit is a repeated invitation to join our Stitch Along from my last post.

If you’ve been following the progress of our other SALs, you’ll know that me and Claire tend to stitch the same project and Gun, Jule and Kate all stitch something else of their own choice. If you haven’t seen what they are up to, click on their names above. UPDATE: There are now nine stitchers in the group.

Would you like to join us too?

If you would like to join the SAL, maybe to finish a WIP or to start something new, just drop me an email and then all you need to do is post an update every three weeks on the same day as us, linking to the rest of the group and show some progress. It can be as little or as much progress as you wish but it must be some progress Winking smile. If you don’t have a blog but would love to join in, I’ll happily post a photo of your progress with my updates if you wish. My email address is at the right hand side of this page. You all know you have a project that doesn’t deserve to be left unfinished at the bottom of a drawer. It doesn’t even have to be cross stitch so you have absolutely no excuses. This is the way to get something finished. Go for it!

Our next SAL update will be on 12th October 2014. Watch this space Smile.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
